Beijing Automotive Industry Corp or best known as BAIC, is looking to acquire Italian design firm Pininfarina. Pininfarina has been working with a wide variety of high-end automobile manufacturers, such as Ferrari, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, Jaguar, Volvo, Alfa Romeo, as well as Lancia.
The Chinese auto manufacturer is currently working with Pininfarina in collaboration on its forthcoming models based on older Saabs.
Since mid-2009, Pininfarina's family ownership has been looking to sell its majority stake in that company. Interest from a number of Chinese auto manufacturers has been piqued and BAIC is not alone, there are also some automakers in bidding for the right to get the design house. Among them are Brilliance and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile, Indian automakers Mahindra, Bajaj Auto as well as Canadian parts supplier Magna International.
