BMW along with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. is now working on a new plug-in hybrid sedan concept based on the long wheelbase model of the local market 5-Series Sedan. The new plug-in hybrid sedan concept will be showcased at the 2011 Auto Shanghai later this month and will then go on sale exclusively in China.
The plug-in hybrid sedan will have a parallel hybrid set-up consists of a 160 kW (215HP) petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology mated to a 70 kW (95 PS / 94 bhp) electric motor. The electrical motor is powered by a high-voltage battery attached in the luggage compartment and could be charged using the mains power supply.
Performance wise, the 5-Series Plug-in Hybrid has emissions-free range of up to 75 kilometers (47 miles) at a fixed speed of 60 km/h or around 37 mph. Backing up the electric power is the petrol engine which can extend the range to 400 kilometers or 249 miles.
BMW Brilliance revealed that it will take the 5-Series LWB Plug-in Hybrid to production in China begin in 2013. Further details and more photos are expected to be unleashed at the 2011 Auto Shanghai.
